Safety & compliance

Care starts before cargo moves.

A useful movement review brings the load, handling, equipment, documents and route into the same conversation. Regulated cargo is assessed before acceptance, and the relevant responsibilities need to be clear at every handover.

Four areas to clarify.

Cargo. Describe the goods accurately, including mass, dimensions, packaging and any temperature-sensitive, dangerous-goods or customs status.

Handling and equipment. Identify loading and unloading arrangements, lifting needs, load distribution, securing and site access. Suitability depends on the actual cargo and transport unit.

Documents and responsibilities. Identify the parties supplying cargo instructions, declarations, releases and completion evidence. Tell us which information is available and what is still outstanding.

Route and handovers. Share the exact locations, proposed timing and any terminal, border or site constraints that affect the movement.

The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code explains the role of accurate cargo information, suitable units, load distribution and securing across the transport chain.

Make the responsibility visible.

Ask who prepares the load, who supplies each required document, who authorises collection and who receives the cargo. If a responsibility is undecided, identify it in the enquiry so it can be resolved before arrangements are confirmed.

Give the additional requirements a place in the brief.

Dangerous goods.

Provide transport classification, packaging, quantity, safety data and emergency information for review against the applicable road and other modal requirements. See Department of Transport guidance and our Dangerous goods guide.

Bonded cargo.

Clarify the customs procedure, declarant, licensed remover role and movement and completion documents. See SARS remover guidance and our Bonded & non-bonded cargo guide.

Reefer cargo.

Supply written operating conditions, equipment details and the proposed power, monitoring and handover responsibilities. See CTU Code temperature-control guidance and our Reefer containers guide.

Ask the team for a movement update.

Company vehicle tracking is monitored around the clock. Contact the team with your movement details or reference to discuss a status enquiry and the information available for your movement.

Ask for the documents relevant to your movement.

Tell the team which company, carrier, equipment or cargo document you need and what it is required for. The applicable requirements and document availability will be confirmed for the enquiry.

Share the requirements early.

Include the cargo status, handling constraints and documents you already have with your route enquiry.
