Containerised deliveries

A clear plan for every container handover.

Dynamic Solvents reviews container transport enquiries across South Africa from its Cape Town base. Share container, cargo and readiness details for port, depot and customer handovers so collection and delivery requirements can be assessed.

Describe the container and the cargo.

Container size and type affect the movement, but they are only part of the brief. Tell us whether the container is loaded or empty, what the loaded cargo contains, its weight and what must happen at collection and delivery.

For a loaded unit, accurate cargo description, mass and packing information help the responsible parties assess safe carriage. The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code sets out the information and responsibilities of consignors, packers, shippers and carriers.

Prepare these details.

Container details.

Size, type, number of units, loaded or empty status, container number if assigned, and relevant booking or release references. Identify any reefer, dangerous-goods or bonded requirements.

Cargo and mass.

Goods description, packaging, cargo weight and the available container gross-mass information. Explain any heavy, unevenly distributed, fragile or unusual load.

Collection and delivery.

Exact locations, responsible contacts, access restrictions, loading or unloading arrangements and whether the container will remain at the delivery point or require another handover.

Readiness and timing.

The ready date, collection authority or release status, terminal or depot requirements, required delivery window and any empty-return instructions supplied by the relevant party.

Clarify the next handover.

Identify who provides the release information, who confirms the collection slot, who receives the container and who supplies any return instructions. Share the latest information from the relevant shipping line, terminal, depot or customer rather than treating a transport instruction as proof that collection is ready.

If the container is being exported by sea.

For packed containers on ships to which SOLAS applies, the shipper is responsible for providing verified gross mass in time for the vessel stowage plan. VGM is a condition of loading and does not itself guarantee loading. Identify who obtains and submits it and include the shipping line's required cut-off. See IMO VGM guidance.
